What is a panoramic X-ray?

A panoramic X-ray is a type of X-ray you can get at the dentist’s office to show the inside of your mouth and jaw. Just like traditional X-rays, panoramic X-rays emit radiation to create an image showing your bones and tissues in shades of white and gray.

The photo a panoramic X-ray takes is a wrap-around photo that shows your entire mouth in a single image. It shows your:

  • Teeth
  • Teeth roots
  • Temporomandibular joints
  • Nasal area
  • Sinuses
  • Upper and lower jawbones

By examining your panoramic X-ray image, your dentist at Frontier Family  Dental can detect, examine, and diagnose many dental issues. Panoramic X-rays are also helpful for treatment planning purposes.

When might I need a panoramic X-ray?

A panoramic X-ray from Frontier Family Dental can show many features, including structural abnormalities, damage from infections, and injuries. Your dentist might provide one if you have symptoms of a dental condition or, every so often, as part of your standard dental exam.

After getting your X-ray, your dentist goes over the results with you. The X-ray can help diagnose or evaluate:

  • Bone abnormalities
  • Tumors
  • Infections
  • Cysts
  • Impacted teeth
  • Tooth and jaw fractures
  • Temporomandibular joint damage

You might also get a panoramic X-ray as part of the planning process for orthodontic treatments like braces or Invisalign®.

What are the benefits of panoramic X-rays?

Panoramic X-rays are highly versatile and bring many advantages to a dental office. Frontier Family Dental relies on panoramic X-rays for detailed assessment, accurate diagnoses, and effective treatment planning.

These imaging tests are a quick way to get a look at your entire mouth. They offer sharp images that your dentist can magnify to see in greater detail. Many people find them more comfortable than standard intraoral X-rays because the device rotates around the outside of your head instead of operating inside your mouth, which can trigger your gag reflex.

During your next visit to Frontier Family Dental, your dentist can explain the process of getting a panoramic X-ray and how it might be useful as part of your personalized evaluation.

Call Frontier Family Dental or schedule an appointment online for comprehensive dental services, including panoramic X-ray imaging, today.
